Film reviews as I go
Lea asked me what did I see lately. Maybe it's here...
- (7/01/04) Haven't seen Jesus' son
for a while, forgot how much I liked it.
- (6/20/04) New film by Michael Haneke is out,
Time of the Wolf
. Just as sadistic, heavy, painfull, beautiful, slow as
Funny games,
Code unknown and
Piano teacher.
- (4/22/04)There are rumors that Donnie Darko is being rereleased
, looking forward to that. The movie wasn't big in theathers, but is apparently cult. It is quite off the
beaten path, ath least for the whole Hollywood shabang thing.
- (4/19/04) It is a bit predictable to recommend Kill Bill 1/2
, but nevertheless, I am.
- (3/19/04) Saw on friday
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, liked it, sad/silly at times. Like other Charlie Kaufman films,
quirky, fun, good, but not really cutting deep (into me at least).
- (2/8/04) Jerzy Kawalerowicz,
retrospective in Lincoln Center. Saw The real end of the great war and The shadow. The first one was really heavy,
about a traumatized concentration camp surviver, his wife and suicide; second is a kind of a Rashomon stories loosely connected,
real joy in comparison. Both good, very nice cinematography, kind of Hitchcock angles and shadows, looks real pretty in black and white,
scary when needed. As the review says, apparently Jerzy was
"A founding member, along with Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk and Tadeusz Konwicki, of what's become known as the "Polish Spring,"
that remarkable film movement that revolutionized filmmaking across Eastern Europe in the late 1950s".
- (1/3/04) The triplets of Belleville,
animated movie from Quebec, hommage to Jacque Tati, but darker,
story is uncouth(my new favourite word). It is unique and really funny and weirdly sentimental,
and I have to see it again.
- (12/17/03) Morvern Callar, not much happens, no pretty chicks
(though Samantha Morton is totally underrated), almost has subtitles,
or it should given all the damn scottish, long beautiful contemplative shots with no words, cool music like
Stereolab ,
Aphex Twin, the Can. Yeah, they all spell american blockbuster.
- (06/..) It is true that I have seen 28 days later at least 5 times, though it
did have 3 different endings. I like Danny Boyle of Trainspotting fame, his gritty digital shots,
horror/meaning of life theme, music by Godspeed you black emperor,
and naturally, there has to be a
cool, babyface lead like Cillian Murphy. I do admit to somewhat unhealthy
obsession for a couple of weeks.
- (12/../02) Culkin seed is not that evil after all, they did give
Kieran Culkin for
Igby goes down , in which I was especially
interested in, since for the first time I could play 'Name the place' in NY.
People are cold, Igby is lost, Amanda Peet is high out of her nose, Susan Sarandon is ruthless, again good music.
